WISER Programs


• Energy Geosciences—WVU has deep expertise strong partners, and significant activities in the energy geosciences, including long-term support of unconventional hydrocarbon development in the Appalachian Basin and pioneering research, outreach, and education to align the significant commercial oil and gas expertise in the Appalachian basin to emerging geothermal opportunities in the region.

• Carbon Management and Industrial Decarbonization—Region leading expertise in technologies, techniques and policies to reduce the carbon intensity of heavy industry and energy production, providing our partners with tools to meet future carbon targets and ESG requirements.

• Hydrogen— WVU provides comprehensive expertise in hydrogen production, utilization, storage, and policy, with cutting edge and nationally recognized research for low-carbon production of hydrogen, and region leading expertise in the utilization and subsurface storage of hydrogen and other hydrocarbons

• Center for Sustainable Mine Lands— Partnering with industries, communities, researchers, and landowners to develop a comprehensive approach for the conversion of former mine sites and other disturbed sites to high-value locations for economic development, energy production, and recreation.
